The Heavy Weight Arab Americans Bear at Work

The news cycle feels like an endless loop of conflict, yet we’re still expected to show up at our desks, hit our KPIs, and perform as if the world isn’t shaking. For many, that’s a tall order—but for Arab Americans, the pressure is unbearable. The current climate makes it incredibly difficult to bring your full self to work when your identity is constantly filtered through a lens of crisis.

I recently spoke with author, professor, and speaker Dr. Nadine Naber, a leading expert on the Arab American experience, to unpack this. She pointed out a fundamental gap in our collective understanding:

“Many Arab Americans walk into workplaces carrying a quiet weight. People either don’t know what the word ‘Arab’ means, or stereotypes flatten a vast, diverse region into a single story of war. Right now, people are even confusing Arabs and Iranians—despite there being 22 Arab countries, none of which are Iran.”

Dr. Naber’s point is a wake-up call. If we are serious about inclusive excellence, we have to see Arab Americans beyond the headlines. She reminds us that, ‘”This is a community of doctors, artists, engineers, and organizers—families who have spent generations building the fabric of the United States while carrying rich traditions of creativity and community care.”

The Knowledge Gap

Let’s be honest: Did you think Iran was one of those 22 Arab countries? If you’re hesitating, you’re not alone. But that hesitation illustrates the problem. When we lack basic cultural literacy, we unintentionally leave our colleagues to navigate a minefield of misconceptions and “headline-driven” biases entirely on their own.
